Do it yourself eco-friendly seed bombs are easy and an adventure to make, here's how.
What to do in advance:
You will need:
Firstly soak strips of newspaper (or paper from your shredder) in a bucket of warm water overnight.
What to do in advance:
- Dry flower petals
- Harvest (or purchase) organic, non-GMO seeds, I hand harvested the seeds from our organic pollinating flower garden.
- May need to pick up a blender from the thrift shop if you don't have a high powered blender (this can burn out blender motors)
You will need:
- Newspaper (torn into strips) or paper from your shredder
- 2 buckets
- Warm water
- Blender
- Seeds
- Dried petals
- Muslin, cheesecloth, or thin tea towel
- Silicon mold or ice cube tray
- Cookie sheet(s)
Firstly soak strips of newspaper (or paper from your shredder) in a bucket of warm water overnight.
I added 2 small handfuls of soaked newspaper to my blender and filled the container with enough warm water to cover it and whip until mushy.
Continue blending small batches of newspaper until finished and your bucket is full of mush.
Add seeds. For this particular mixture I added a large handful of nasturtium seeds, a large handful each of 2 varieties of sunflowers, 1 1/2 large handfuls of dill seeds, a medium handful of CA poppy, a medium handful of poppy seeds, large handful of kale seeds, a medium handful of cosmos, and a small handful or borage seeds.
I strained the pulp through a section of muslin cloth by twisting and collected the water in a container to water the garden with.
Press pulp mixture FIRMLY into silicon molds, some excess water can be drained off during this step as well.
Carefully press the seed bombs out of the molds and set on cookie sheets to dry in a warm spot. Be sure to not let the seeds overheat and die as well as making sure they dry quick enough to not start sprouting.
Et voilà, your eco-friendly handcrafted seed bombs are ready for disbursement!
